nickHeading north from Cell Block Zero, the straight hallway quickly splits into a warren of cracked stone and twisting tunnels. You can see sections of the walls and floors where carved slabs have been laid down, but most of it is rough, unworked stone. There are three paths, one continuing north where water can be heard flowing, one to the north-east, and one straight west which gives you an uncomfortable prickling sensation: the stalactites flicker in the light of your torch, looking unpleasantly like looming fangs... What do you do?

garmr red_kangarooFrom the twisting and crumbling hallway, you emerge out into a comparatively larger space. Standing on the stump of a broken bridge, a river rushes by below, not loud or turbulent, but moving with relentless force over smooth stone. It comes around the bend at a fair clip and vanishes further to the north-west. You can't see anything on the other side of the river apart from more sheer rock, perhaps this bridge-stump was once more of a pier? What do you do?

"Hello?" I scream, "Anyone there?"
If nobody has other ideas, I'd go back to the crossroads and take the NE passage, as that one might circumvent the river and doesn't seem too menacing.

((I guess we can return here later if no dryer way presents itself.))
I go back to the crossroads and take the NE passage.

Heading up and across through the corridor, you come to a square chamber. A strong lemony stench fills the air and burns your nostrils slightly (that is, if you have an ordinary biology). The floor is made of up four large slabs, each clearly defined, which look inconvenient to place in a room like this. On the far side of the room, you can see two exits, one going north, the other south. However, lurking in the shadows of the far side of the room, you see some kind of metallic spider-thing, about the size of a dog, clinging to the ceiling and holding a...clipboard?
What do you do?

"Greetings, ceiling-dweller. Be you friend or foe?" Henry XIV taps his porcelain breast, making a hollow sound. "We are both of mineral descent, you and I. Such beings can trust each other, is it not so?"

The creature shuffled a little bit, but otherwise doesn’t respond. It can clearly see you, and clearly sees you seeing it, but doesn’t seem to mind. Those claws of it look mighty sharp, but you don’t get any particularly hostile vibe from it.

I examine the slabs. Are they raised, or level with the ground? Are there any engravings/runes/marks?
I will take out one of my rations (a live lizard), and set it down on a slab. If nothing happens, I'll step on the slab. If still nothing happens, I'll try jumping up and down a bit.
If nothing at all happened so far, I'll turn to the king and say: "Well, it seems I'm a bit too paraniod about strange stones on the ground."

Very very slightly raised. No marks at all, and more noticeably, not a speck of dust, as if they've been recently cleaned. Nothing happens when you drop a lizard onto it, but wen you step firmly on the slab, a spray of orange gas comes squirting out of the wall nearest to the slab. The metal creature scribbles furiously on the clipboard, before scuttling along the roof towards the northern exit.
Turns out your paranoia is completely justified! What next?

How quickly does the gas spread?
If it's a heavy, slow moving gas, I'll try to creep closer and stick the poor lizard in it.
If it spreads fast, I'll grab Henry and Sandra (I think both are with me right now?), and drag them to the northern exit until the gas cannot reach us, then try to creep closer and stick the poor lizard in the gas.
((Note to self: Try the other three slabs, too.))

It spreads quickly, and in order to reach the northern exit, you'd have to travel over the slabs. There's a hairline crack between each slab and the walls, and the slabs and each other.

Screw it, I'm not getting experimented on again, and especially not by some spider-thing! I have some very choice words for anyone who would experiment on another being.
I hold my breath and try to shield my face as best as I can, then sprint towards the northern exit.

"Jaxudyzad, wait! ... Oh, confound it!" Henry XIV runs after Jaxudyzad.
(Just going to highlight that I take half damage from poison...)

Onwards! Swirls of orange gas pump into the room as the slabs click downwards under your feet. It gets in your eyes, up your nose, into your clothes, it is immediately itchy and painful and you feel like throwing up, as well as a horrifying numbness as it gets inside you. 1d12 damage to mortals, 1d12/2 for superior porcelain beings.
Roll the damage yourself, if you drop to exactly 0hp you'll gain a scar, if you take 10 or more damage then we go into the Overkill rules (take 1d8 damage next round, or 1d4 if you roll around in pain)

I'm not clear on what happens now... if I take 6 damage and I'm at 1hp, do I now have to make a roll with a 5-in-20 chance of dying?

I'm at 0 hp, so I gain a scar:
(So, if this reroll is higher than my max hp, my max hp are increased from taking the risk, do I understand it right?)
y2eU1JFK2d6
I retch and wheeze, coughing up blood as the gas burns in my lungs.
Then I notice that our king has nearly collapsed, running a little later than me and thus breathing in much more of the gas. I help him all the way to the northern passage, out of reach of the gas, then kneel next to him.
(I have a Potion of Panacea. I will try giving it to Henry, so that he hopefully vomits/coughs up some of the gas.)
"You don't understand how hard this gets," I whisper more for myself than anyone else. "Henry XIII, he was the one who threw me to a dungeon, let his scientists loose on me. I know you killed him. I respect, even admire you for that. But every time I look at you, all I see is his face."

red_kangarooCorrect, your max HP has gone up, but until you get some help, you are Seriously Poisoned and cannot heal. You might want to save that potion for yourself! garmrNo. Unless you are at 0hp, you don't make the damage-in-20 roll. You can just spend a few minutes cleaning yourself off, getting the goop out of your eyes, and coughing, and heal to full HP again. However, this takes enough time for an encounter check, so it's up to you. Now that you've made it across the stone slabs, you can either go north or south with ease. You can hear the river again coming from the north path. What do you do?

((I think what garmr meant is that he had 1 hp, then took 6 damage, so he's at -5. Thus trying to save him with the panacea.))

Yes, if you have at least 1hp, you cannot die from taking damage. You can only die while at 0hp and then taking a blow.

Following the metal-spider-thing north, you reach a very familiar sight: the river, again, this time with a set of stairs leading down to the water, rather than a crumbling half-bridge. The creature, still clutching its clipboard, scuttles down-river, beyond the range of your torch.
What now?

"Jaxudyzad, let it go. The creature is too fast for us, and clearly knows the terrain well."
If Jaxudyzad insists on continuing, Henry XIV will follow on the basis of safety in numbers. Otherwise, he will go down the stairs to the river and wash the orange gunk off his body.

Done. Are you going to wait here long enough for your HP to recover, or are you going to keep moving? red_kangaroo, are you going to cure yourself with the potion? Otherwise, you won't recover any HP.

I stare after the creature, but then sit down on the steps.
"Sorry about that. Let's catch out breath."
I down the potion to recover from the poison and vomit the orange gunk back to the bottle.
"Any ideas where to go, Your Majesty?"
