Henry: glug glug glug. Woo! You wobble to about hip-height, swaying gently. That stuff has a serious kick to it, but you're flying now. It takes a minute to get used to it, but flying seems relatively simple. You make your way across the lake, only dipping the tip of one boot in when you drop a little too low by accident.
In the centre of the lack is a tiny outcropping of metal, jutting above the waves. Sitting on it is a large metal man, at least twice your height, curled up as tightly as possibly in the small area available above the filthy fluid. Your torchlight must've reflected off one of its dark glassy eyes. It doesn't move at all as you approach.

“If we had to ferry ourselves across this lake how best do you think we could do it?”

"Greetings -hic!- fellow mineral person. Are you trapped in this, erm, mysterious subterranean lake? -hic!- what am I saying? Everything here is subterrenanean... or is it in a box so it's not... anyway. How do you do!"

"I should be able to throw Sir Hurricane relatively far, maybe he can carry a rope for us. However, that only gets us over a strait. Or perhaps this filth will freeze easily enough to make an ice bridge."
I will try blasting the oil sludge with the ice orb.

Henry: The metal man doesn't respond. Perhaps he's asleep?
Jax: It makes a frothy icy mess, and a foul stench starts to invade your nostrils, but eventually you create a small ice floe. I'm sure there are slipperier surfaces in the world than "oily ice" but I can't think of any right now!

((My danger senses are going off quite strongly right now.... But I am too far away to consult Henry haha))
"Seems that will not work, hmmm. Well, I advise that tossing seems like the best option. But lets wait for Henry and that odd robot to return"

I throw an iron spike at the metal man, not too hard, just to get his attention.

Hmmmmm I guess I will try meditation while we wait. Just seeing what I can sense by taking the time to read the tremors and the magic.

Hurrican: Henry is definitely in yelling distance.
Henry: The iron spike pings off the robot. First, nothing. Then, the sound of creaking gears, and the teeth-aching hum of magic. A voice issues forth from the metal man, sounding very faint and far away, but getting closer. "Hmm... what disturbs me from my wretched slumber? Perhaps a little mouse, scurrying about in the fetid quagmire of existence."
Blerble: The tremors are still weird and just... wrong. Sitting next to the large open area, and the large body of liquid, you get a sense through the tremors of a third area. It's not solid, and it's not liquid, and it's not a gas (which do show up in tremorsense, just as an empty space with no details), it's just. Not.

"A-ha! The sleeper wakes at last! But why so glum, friend? There is more to life than -hic!- misery. Do you not think that your view of existence as a fetid quagmire might be influenced by, I don't know... the fact that you are sitting in a literal fetid quagmire?!?"
Henry takes another pull of the Flying Wine, although there isn't really much left.
"Why, beyond this sea of glop, there are wonders and terrors to be found! I've seen things you wouldn't believe... I've seen eye-beams glitter in the dark by the dwarf-forged gate. Sentient plants on fire off the shoulder of... Ahem. Anyway. My point is, even in a miserable dungeon like this, there is more to life than wallowing in despair."

"Perhaps... perhaps you are right little mouse. Maybe beyond this lake, better times might be had. Or perhaps, you are trying to trick me into falling in. Oh, to flounder my last in vain foolishness! Better I think, to wait here, where it is safe."

"Well, obviously you cannot cross the lake as you are now. But what if I were to render assistance? Hm! In fact I think I have just the -hic!- thing!"
I start digging in my pack for my Gravity Ring.
How high is the ceiling in this room? Also, what is the island made out of and is there anything at all on it besides the metal man?

It's very high. The island is a jutting bit of metal, similar to the floors you have been walking on. There isn't room for anything apart from him. How are you going to do this, just hand over the ring and explain how it works?

(squinting at the distant ceiling) "Hrm, perhaps this isn't such a good idea after all. Friend, tell me how did you end up in this predicament? Is there any chance you can walk through this fetid goop?"
I will thrust the end of my extendable mirror pole into the fluid. If it doesn't melt/dissolve/etc, I will push the whole pole in to see how deep it goes.
If these investigations don't turn up an obvious line of attack, I will fly back to the party and consult with them.

"I do not remember. Or rather, I have memory of it, but I cannot see within it. It is blocked to me, as is much of that time."
"If I wished to a die, a slow and painful death, I could immerse myself in this substance."
It doesn't melt, but the lake is definitely deeper than the entire pole.
As you fly away, the metal man says "Fare thee well, mousie. Perhaps I shall see you again before your death."

Are the walls solid metal, or riveted sheets? Maybe we could tear a sheet off a somehow make it into a boat?

After relating his encounter to the others, Henry XIV looks dejected. "At long last I find a fellow mineral-person in this pit... and he is trapped where I can do him no good! What is life but a cruel joke?" He begins sobbing drunkenly while still hovering a few inches above the ground.
(I can't think of any plausible way to rescue this guy at the moment, so if nobody else has suggestions I'm happy to move on.)

(Me neither. Maybe once we get out, we can bring back some barrels from that fungus room to make a raft.)
"Do not fret, Your Majesty. If he survived for so long in this predicament, he can wait for a bit longer for the rescue and we shall return promptly once we have the means."
I will continue further along the shore.

I have a shrink ray, we could shrink him or make him even bigger so he could travel through or be carried.

May need to charge the magical batteries though somehow.

"That is an excellent idea, my vermiform friend. Let us keep an eye out for sources of magical energy."
Is it possible to 'cannibalise' a magic item to charge the shrink ray? I'm thinking of sacrificing one of my magic grenades...

“We could try it. How do we all get over there though? And do we make the metal man bigger or smaller?”

It is possible to cannibalise magic items, but the process works better the more similar they are to each other. Your grenades are very much destructive, rapid devices, while the shrink is a transformative, continual device. Plus, disassembling magical explosives often ends up with the disassembler becoming the disassemblee...

I was thinking battery connected to grenade. So something that takes connected to something that gives. We can wait a bit or maybe use the rune canister area we found to charge the batteries. Maybe we should just keep exploring for now.

Let's keep exploring, then. Unfortunately that means my Flying Wine will probably wear off before we come back here, but I don't see any way around that.

As long as you are still flying, garmr, we could go back to the metal cliff and see if you can't get up on it.

Henry: What with your flying around and time spent thinking, the flying wine has indeed worn off. Luckily, you don't have much of a headache.
As you continue around the south side of the lake, you see a section of the wall jutting out a few paces into the oily sludge. Looking closer, you can see that it is a giant floodgate built into the wall, descending deep into the foul water, and high up as well, forming a full circle. You can also see slats of metal sticking out, acting as crude (and somewhat dangerous) steps to allow you to walk all the way over the gate.
