Welcome to the Endless Dungeon! It's probably not endless, but it is definitely a dungeon. This is the continuation of a play-by-post game delving into the depths of a (so far) nameless megadungeon. To get started, make a new character, post in the introductions thread, and take a look at joining an exploratory party. Alternatively, you might have plans of your own, and seek to plumb the depths of the dungeon by yourself. To each their own!
HOW IT WORKS
Each thread in the Delves category is a sort of "camera" following around that specific group of adventurers. Anyone is welcome to start a new thread if they wish to venture forth from Cell Block Zero, the starting area. Alternatively, if a party of adventurers was to split, or join up with another group, the two threads would be merged. Make sure to subscribe to notifications from any threads you are present in!
CHARACTER CREATION
First of all, the system used in ED is Finders Keepers, a bare bones cross between Into the Odd and Knave, fuelled by thousands of entries from across the blogs and plucked from the lost realms of G+. Press the "New Character" button as many times as you like until you have a character that interests you. Standard, Gonzo and Boring are all welcome, and only have minor differences. No need to spend too much effort getting the "perfect" character, having low stats and hitpoints results in better starting equipment and abilities. The one rule: "Always forwards, never back!" once you reject a character to generate a new one, that's it, it's gone.
Once you have a character, post it here for perpetuity! I award 1 XP for a character portrait drawn to the best of your ability.
GETTING STARTED
Head over to the introduction thread and say hi, then join one of the delves. Most characters appear in Cell Block Zero, but you're welcome to ask around in the shoutbox (see below) and join an ongoing delve deeper in the dungeon. Ask as many questions as you need if you feel uncertain about anything!
DISCOVERIES AND MAPS
The dungeon is a hostile, weird and dangerous place. Cell Block Zero is five floors below the surface, and it is a lethal journey to freedom. Dozens of delves have demonstrated that the most potent tool in the arsenal of any explorer is teamwork, collaboration, andflagrant cheating sharing of information. Any information shared on the forums is assumed knowledge amongst all adventurers, and you'd best learn to use it!
In addition, posting questions, requests for information and known mysteries can be a useful source of quests for budding adventurers.
TIPS
No attack rolls! Ever! Just roll damage, so long as it's actually possible to hit.
Zero HP isn't death! The next hit might be though, with a [dmg]-in-20 chance.
If you drop to exactly 0 HP, you gain a Scar (and might also gain some max HP).
To roll as part of a forum post, add [ r o l l = " 1 d 2 0 " ] (remove the spaces).
The best posts combine questions and actions. For example "If I use the grapple hook, will I have to roll to climb down the cliff? If I don't have to roll, I'll head down and take a look around at what I can find". This is especially true during combat, if you stand directly in front of an enemy and just thwack away, you'll probably die. If you ask a question and know what you'll do if you get the answer you want, then say so!
Play-by-post can suffer from the drag of everybody waiting for everyone else. It's better to post first, ask questions later (or during). I am very lenient when it comes to any request like "I didn't think that was what would happen, can I do ___ instead?" or "I didn't want to go with the group, I'm still back in room X". If you feel like doing something, just do it.
If you find yourself swamped with commitments in real life, struggling to keep up with the posting rate, or just losing interest, don't feel embarrassed or disheartened! I pride myself on giving everyone an opportunity to try something new, and understand completely when things go awry. Please just send me a private message if you are dropping out, I won't take it to heart and it helps me keep things running smoothly if I know not to wait up. And of course, if circumstances change and you want to give it another go, you're welcome back any time!
