It doesn't pounce, just watches you as you back away. In fact, it doesn't seem to be moving at all, though you can feel the below-ground tension still ratcheting higher. As you watch though, you're pretty sure it isn't going to break just by you being here.

I will wait for the tension to cap and observe.

Your tremorsense can feel something go clonk and then start regular ratcheting, the tension releasing, then rising again, then releasing once more. A clever and cunning idea, but whoever (whatever?) designed this particular machine was prepared to play the waiting game.

How spaced out are the intervals? Can I time running through for when it is at low tension?

Sure you can! It's probably about once a minute. Which direction are you running?

Were there exits in that room? I will probably run center and try to snag something on my way through.

Running towards the centre would put you directly beneath those glowing red eyes. You can't see any other exits just yet. There is nothing on the floor you can see within your torchlight, except a few weird dents in the ground.

Huh that’s very odd. Just a sentinel with nothing to guard. Ummmm I will run the edges following the edges of the room.

The room is a lot narrower than it is long. I'll guess that you go a random direction of left/right: W1|gYBm21d2
Following the right-hand (south) wall, you scurry along at a fair clip. From the darkness, you hear the brief rattle of chains, then a load WHOOSH. What do you do?1d2

If there are not dents in the wall hug the wall, otherwise dive into a corner. Where wall meets floor.

You duck into the corner, just before a tremendous CRASH makes your ears ache. An immense block of metal has landed near you. It's attached to a chain, and there's a chunk-chunk-chunk as it starts to retract back away and up.

I grab the chain!

Post by Spwack on May 8, 2021 3:28:02 GMT
The chain pulls taut, and you and the block are whisked up into the darkness, swinging wildly! You are pulled towards the middle of the room, and your torch falls upon the creature in the middle of the room: a building-sized blocky robot, with two burning red eyes, arms like tree-trunks, and a torso that is planted solidly in the middle of the floor. It's head is turned towards you, it doesn't have a mouth or any other identifying features.
What do you do?

Watch and wait while holding on.

It lowers the block that you are sitting on with a thunk. And then, it sways it back and forth a bit, with wider and wider swings. It's already getting hard to grip on, and if it goes much faster, you'd have to cling on with your whole body.

“Can you understand me? Swing in circles for yes.” I will keep holding on for now

Post by Spwack on May 13, 2021 8:32:19 GMT
It might be able to understand you, but it's swinging the block (and you) back and forth, about to go into a full loop pretty soon, whether it agrees with what you're saying or not.

I’m finding it hard to picture which way the chain is swinging. Let’s just assume blerble says swing x ways to say yes and have it be something noticeable but not having stopped the swinging. I’m going to wrap my body around the chain. How is the chain anchored to the block?

The block is solid steel with a thick loop welded to it, that loop is attached to the chain, the chain goes up to the arm of the machine. There's no reaction from the machine when you question it, it just spins faster, and then starts retracting the chain to make the block spin faster still! You'll need to make a STR check to keep holding on at this point.

You certainly are, but you are holding on tight with your entire worm body. Do you have... a plan? Or are you just hoping for the best?

It’s reacting to me which I feel implies intelligence, just trying to stick it out and see if it calms down some or maybe it will run out of energy and need to rewind up. I wonder how it senses and chooses to attack me. If you threw a fish in here would it just smash it over and over?

It definitely seems alert, and reactive. Has Blerbles met any of the other types of robots down here?
It doesn't seem to be calming down at all, just spinning around the block of metal, and flicking it back and forth to try and dislodge you, to not a lot of avail. I imagine a worm, completely wrapped around a chain, would be quite hard to remove.

Blerble has never met a robot before.from my new vantage point what can I see of the room?

Post by Spwack on May 25, 2021 3:56:39 GMT
A whole lot of spinning. There might be an exit on the east side of the room though, the opposite side of the way you entered. Unless you're upside down right now, in which case you're just looking at the way you came in. Hard to tell when you are spinning this fast!

You have to land dead-flat to avoid the block, rather than a springy landing that would've been much more comfortable. At that kind of speed, it'll be 1d4 damage: jZ3HtYZt1d4
But with a roll like that, you can slither and scurry at full speed directly towards the east wall, where there is indeed a large opening! The machine makes a grinding noise behind you as you leave.
The wide hallway split into two as you move east, one leading north (towards an odd smell that you can't quite place) and one south-east. There's a slight dampness to the air coming from that direction.
More interesting however, is a strange sight at the base of the wall: a weird patch of dissolved stone, with spatters of discoloured rock all around it.1d4
