"Balble hmmm? Balble. Come closer Balble, that I might whisper wisdom in your... ears? Unless you have none. In which case I'll just whisper wisdom vaguely towards you."

“What?! I have no ears. Speak up!”

The creature makes an irritated rattling sound, and runs around in it's cage, making it swing to and fro from the chain attached to the ceiling. It doesn't say anything else.

Yeah I will go check out the locked door. What can I sense about it and what is on the other side? Is there dust? Does it look regularly used? Any traces of stuff by it? What do I tremorsense near it? What do I hear? Any mechanisms/traps?

"No where are you going come back! I have so much to tell you!" says the creature, throwing itself a the bars of the cage.
The floor is certainly dusty, and the door hasn't been opened for a while. Your tremorsense doesn't detect anything except solid rock around the door, and you can't hear anything on the other side.

I will approach the creature slightly. “So tell me.”

The creature beckons you even closer. It's not going to say anything until you at least come up to the cage.

Eh I am too hesitant. I will worm away to the locked door and cast cantankerous knock on it.

The lock squeaks and the door rattles, but stays stuck fast. You'll need something extra, perhaps lashings of power, or if you are frantic, take d20 damage in desperation.

Perhaps it needs a nudge. I spray the inner mechanisms with acid. I had hoped to keep the lock but it can be destroyed instead.

The acid dribbles in, and the lock clanks and thunks. Bits of corroded mechanism rattle to the floor, and the door swings open.
"Noooo don't goooo" says the creature in the cage.
Going down the hallway, you see it branch off to the south. Peering in, you can see three large glass cylinders, each taller than a man, and each smashed in like rotten pumpkins. Sticky-looking fluid has dribbled out of each, and left discoloured splotches on the floor all around.
Further down the hallway, beyond an archway and out into the open, you can hear a suspicious swishing sound.

"sniff... sniffle" the creature makes pathetic noises. "I have secretsss... many secretsss...?"
Nothing, they are lying flat on low slabs of stone.

I will approach the secret monger. “Tell me what should I call you and what lead to you being caged here.”

"[mumble]" says the creature, too quietly to hear. You'll have to get really close to the cage to hear what it is saying.

Could my tremorsense kind of use the cage for amplification to boost my hearing?

I wouldn't think so, it might help you detect sounds from far away through stone, but any details would be mangled and lost.

The creature doesn't respond, apart from more very quiet mumbling.
((Yes, this encounter has turned out to be long and slow. It's not a very obliging creature, is it?))

Eh it’s mumbling has put me off. Someone told me for an npc to be likeable they merely need to have the illusion of trying. I will move on past the now unlocked room and head towards the new sound.

Past the shattered vats, and looking out through the archway, it takes a few moments to figure out what is going on in the next room - In short, tall pillars of some kind of metal, causing giant axes and blades to spin and rotate, swishing past each other in perfect asynchrony. Wherever you look, there is almost always a space between the axes, that disappears almost immediately, closed between swishing razor death.
It's a pretty big chamber, but peering out you can see a large exit in the middle of the east wall, and maybe an exit in the north wall?

Of what are the giant axes made? Where do the axes and blades attach? How tall is this room? Can I perceive some sort of on off switch perhaps by whomever built this thing?

Metal, brightly polished. The axes and blades are attached at different heights to all the different pillars, rotating horizontally. And no, not from here.

Quite a few, there are sweeping axes that glide just above the ground at about ankle-height on a human, which would be an issue for you.

And “Is there a gap up top by the ceiling that we could get through Terrance?”
|
|
|
Post by Spwack on Mar 27, 2021 5:52:01 GMT
Terrance flies up, watches for a moment, then darts between two blades. There's some frantic flying and zipping about, and then he comes back out again further down the hall.
"Negative. I could probably do it, if I had time. And maybe a gauntlet to wear."

Hmmm I will step back and make some good space then shoot a pillar with the shrinking ray set to biggify. I am hoping that with the pillar bigger it will either be really strong and destroy other pillars that it is now hitting or it will get tangled up with other stuff.
