"Well then, worm-friend. Do you wish to try and cross the river, swim down the river, or would you rather return to the teleport gate and use one of your access codes? I do not mind either.
In case we will be crossing the river, I couldn't help but notice the shrink-ray rifle on your back. How long does the shrinkage last? Maybe you could shrink me, throw me across the river, and then Terrance would bring me one end of the chain and I could drag you across the water."

Maybe the tele? The rivers are hard to cross usually.

shrinker would make you about half size

Lets double back, then, and return to the gorge. We climb up to the teleporter, belaying each other once again.
If nothing happens en route, I will let Blerble set a teleportation code, and once we have this escape option open, I will call out to the books:
"Hello there, flying friends? How are you doing? Would you care for a chat, or should we take our leave?"
(Does Terrance hold a torch with open flame, or a closed lantern?)

As you start to climb back up the cliff, looking up, you occasionally see weird flashes of... lightning? Not big bolts, just sparks flickering up there in the darkness.
What do you do?
And I believe Terrance is carrying a hefty-looking lantern that sheds an even white light, it doesn't look like a flame at all in there.

just going to hug the wall at a safe spot and watch this lightning

Yes, and try to be as non-conductive as possible.
Is the lightning coming from this or the other side of the gorge?

It's definitely coming from this side of the gorge. You see the lighting flash a few times, up high against the wall, faintly illuminating the blackness all around. It skips and hops about the place, and a book-bat is set aflame and sent plummeting.

Does it look like the lightning will peter out if we wait for a while? If not, we should probably move to one of the tunnels, to get some cover.

You can see the lightning flicker across the cliff-face, stopping and starting seemingly at random, before eventually vanishing completely.
((Another to add to the recurring characters list!))
What do you do next?

Climb to teleportation gate and let Blerble do his thing with the codes.

Climbing up again, the eerie serenity of your first pass along this cliff has been thoroughly broken. Scorch-marks mar the rock in random locations, while frantic bookbats flap about. One of you needs to make a Dexterity check, unless you have a clever way of keeping yourself safe from a panicked hardback.

Nothing clever I can think of, so hopefully the chain will save me if I slip:

A hefty tome slams into my hand, making me loose my hold and wince in pain. As I stretch my fingers to make sure they're just bruised, not broken, and before I can reaffirm my grip, the sharp bit of rock I have been using as a foothold gives way. For a second, I hang on one hand, willing my fingers not to slip.
They do.

I swing on the chain that binds me to Blerble, scraping my hands raw as I scramble to stop my fall. At least the cliff is ragged enough that there are plenty of holds to reach for.

The two of you did have plenty of planning in terms of climbing safety, so without further ado you hurry towards the top. Jaxudyzad is a little shaken from the experience, and gains 1 Stress. You're at the top of the cliff-face, with the portal directly ahead of you. Book-bats still flit about manically, some of them bearing scorch marks.
What code do you want to put into the portal?

While Blerble manages the portal, I will rest to tend to my scrapes and regain my hp.
(Are we using your STRESS rules, or will go mad with high enough stress? Both?)

((We're using my Stress rules from here, but it'll likely be adjudicated on a case-by-case basis. Get some of those Darkest Dungeon vibes going!)) You might want to rest up somewhere safer than on a cliff-side next to an open portal, but that's up to you. Are you aiming to head back to Cell Block Zero, or explore more?

I will put in 757 for the codes which will lead to some adventure.

My notes say 757. Its the gate on floor -4 by the archway that brings things to life. Pretty unexplored down there so who knows what we will find.

Post by Spwack on Jul 14, 2020 3:24:41 GMT
((I've clearly misread a note in a hurry. It's 753 on -4 for me, which I'll assume you did instead))
The portal slips over your skin like dipping under a pool of luke-warm water. You emerge out the other side, blinking purple from your eyes, feeling your ears pop painfully from the pressure.
You've appeared in a large chamber full of smashed and crumbled rock walls. The portal is at the lowest point of the cave, all around you lie piles of rubble. You can see an exit to the north and to the south, as well as a tiny crawlspace leading east.
Since you are resting here and recovering HP, I'll roll an encounter check: 4dnI2kc51d6
All is calm and quiet. The place is cool and dusty. Are you going to have something to eat since you've been down here a while?1d6

I sit down on a larger rock and take out one of my lizards, biting its head off. ((I've removed one ration from my sheet.))
"So, what parts of this place do you already know? Do you have a destination in mind?"

There is a wizard's grave a little ways from here we could explore. Otherwise this area is fairly new territory. North and South are unexplored here, along with heading East then south.

Let's see the wizard's grave, then! I'm assuming it's through the crawl way to East?
