You could grab Blerble and make a Strength check, if you wanted, but Berble was going last. The tunnel is quite short, a few big paces at most.

I am out of town so someone can make the roll for me for the damage but I am above zero so I am fine for now. I am going to attempt to worm my way free of the tentacles grip.

Where did we emerge from the tunnel?

Damage: 6oAcTJ2o1d8
Ouch! Blerble is struck and wrapped by the razor tendril, but dragged through the tunnel to safety, wriggling away from the lashing creature in the dark.
The cave on the opposite end of the tunnel is a grisly sight: smears of ancient brown-dark blood is scattered in wide sweeps along the floor and ceiling. There are occasionally pick-marks on the walls, but no sign of life otherwise. There are short square-ish tunnels leading north and north-west. From the tunnel you've just exited, you hear the sound of scrabbling. What do you do?1d8

This thing seems intent on chasing us. Let’s make our stand and see if it is able to come through this small hole.

Yes, let's do so. I stand beside the tunnel entrance and hold a poisoned javelin at the ready. I will strike at anything that tries to comes through: vY5aqxwW1d81d8

Jaxudyzad stands and jabs at anything that tries to come through the hole. The creature hisses again, flinching away from the poisoned spear. It makes a few desultory swipes, then all goes quiet again.

ouch that 8 damage well just brings me to zero I guess. The death spiral starts. What can we tell of the two different paths here. Any smells or sounds or sights to differentiate them?

We should really find a place to rest.
I will stand guard at the crawl way as Blerble or Egg check the available exits. The octopus seemed too persistent to easily give up.

The starfish really doesn't seem keen to come through the gap directly into reach of your poisoned javelin, but you honestly can't tell if it has left or if it's waiting in perfect silence and stillness...
If you're in a bit of a rush? No difference at all.
((Also this area hasn't been generated yet. You'll get more info as the area "loads" before you actually head into it.))

I follow Blerble, but still with a javelin at ready and casting a wary glance back at the tunnel we came through.

The tunnel watches you back.
Heading along the north tunnel, you can see spots along the wall where chunks of rock have been cut out, mostly likely with pickaxes. The tunnel is rough and doesn't have any wooden supports, but you don't feel too unsafe.
Then, the humming starts.
There's a sound like a toothpick being broken by a god.
A spurt of dust gushes out ahead, just at the limit of your lantern. What do you do?

Well, if there's anyone out there in the dark, they already know about us due to our lantern light, so:
"Hello?" I call out in a careful voice.

There’s no response. The dust settles. Is there a tunnel there now? You can’t quite see from here.

hmmmmm. do we sense movement ahead like something alive?

No movement apart from trickles of dust and settling stone. There definitely is a tunnel there now, a perfect and precise circle, marred only where it was blasted off excess rock. Looking down the tunnel, you can see the faintest flimsiest glimmer at the far western end. It's perfectly circular all the way along, and further than your lantern-light can reach.

You have to duck a little but you can walk down the tunnel with ease. Dust crinkles around your feet, and you can see... something at the end of a tunnel? The light streaming towards you is vaguely blue, and you get the weird sense that it's pulsing, even though you can't actually see any change.
You feel a sense of pressure in your head, similar to when you use your mind powers. How do you respond?

Post by red_kangaroo on Sept 10, 2020 6:25:44 GMT
Can I use my mind powers without doing damage? I would like to try and mind-poke the blue light, but not in a hostile manner.

it would be interesting if you could use your mind powers to communicate but it still does damage.

Unfortunately, you don't have that kind of fine control, especially since this is from a Failed Background. Are you still going to prod the glowing light? You'll be dealing d4 damage, unless you can think of some way to reduce it.
(A dice roll might be applicable)

What if I take the damage myself? Yes, I will prod the glowing light, but I will try to hold the damage inside my own head and only send out a light push of psychic force.

That seems fair to me. You take 1 damage as you try and contort your brain into a new shape. The bizarre symbol up ahead reaches out something and taps you gently on the mind. How do you respond? Do you let it in?
Blerbles, what are you doing in all this?

Jaxudyzad, you feel prying glimmers of thought worm their way in through your brain.
Jung ner lbh? Bu, n arjobea. Rira jbefr, n sbhaqyvat, lbh’ir orra uneq qbar ol, unira’g lbh? Yrg zr bcra hc gung guveq rlr bs lbhef, ubyq fgvyy n zbzrag...
All of a sudden, the gentle tapping sensation gets a lot stronger. The pressure is greatest right in the centre of your forehead, where your psionic powers usually manifest from. You'll be taking d6 damage (at least) if this keeps up. Do you let it?

I will hold still as it asks.

You take PgfssflN1d6 damage and feel like your head is being carefully peeled like a boiled egg.
Pna lbh urne zr? Ubj nobhg... abj? Be jung nobhg now? How is that? Are you whole and sound of mind? What follows from this sequence, two three five seven eleven thirteen?
The pain in your head leaves almost as quickly as it came. And now, good lord, how long have you had this migraine for? Your thoughts feel clearer and lighter than they ever have since... well, since The Experiment.1d6
