How many frogs are there in here? Does the beanstalk have beans of some kind?
Clearing his throat loudly he will address the frog: "What nature of being are you? What are you doing in this place?"

Like, twenty to thirty?
The beanstalk does not appear to have beans.
"Woe! Woe is me! Am frog. Help." squelches the frog.
"Eat meat? Crunch crunch?" Says your Squire, halfway between ravenous and pandering.

(ah! What a good dilemma. I'm gonna go with with the answer that amused me more.)
"Alas! Frogs are food." And he will nod to his goblins and charge in with pipe and whip. He will try to direct the goblins to minimize damage to the usable meat. As before mentioned, I would like to harvest 5 and then start hauling them to the goblin nest, taking 1 extra (6 in total) for myself. My goal being to win an ally in the goblins broadly as the bringer of meat. I'm sure that tie would be short live but could prove fruitful.
I would also like to ask the professor in passing if he "knows the secret to permanent sight in darkness" and would be willing to trade services for that secret.

These frogs are big, like the size of a small cow each. It's not a matter of just harvesting them, since they seem willing to flee and perhaps defend themselves as well.
Are you going to attack?

I guess I am confused on threat level assessment in this game. I know that I hit automatically and deal damage, is it the same for enemies? If they hit automatically, I only have 2 HP so do they just deal a single damage or do they also roll dice? I know that you don't die at 0 HP however if I get knocked to 0HP almost guaranteed (if enemies auto hit that is) it implies a certain risk that would be good to keep in mind. No matter the answer to those though, I will lead an attack with my henchlings! It might just impact how many I harvest.
Admittedly, this is the first time that Hurricane has come across a talking animal. He recognizes that this might stop some people from seeing them as food, but he is sure a cow or pig would say similar things if they could talk. Just because they can express their internal self, doesn't mean other animals don't also experience those things and it would be hypocritical to eat meat but not eat these frogs.
He will nod to his Wizzzard and Squire and charge in after it, pipe in hand. He is excited to see what the other two can do. His attack does: wuqsKK4I1d61d6

After posting I immediately saw the bit about dodging, meaning that enemies do automatically hit, which is good to know. Do you heal after a given amount of time or does all healing have to be magical in nature?

((Yes, all attacks hit automatically, it is just a matter of damage. If you take damage while at 0 HP, you have a [dmg]-in-20 chance of dying or being otherwise majorly inconvenienced. If you have time to catch a breather after a fight, and aren't suffering from excessive hunger/thirst, you heal to full HP))
The frog tries to back-waddle, realises it is in a sticky situation, and turns to look at you. It takes a bonk on the noggin from your pipe, but seems more upset than hurt. It makes an almighty RIBBIT and lashes out with it's tongue!

The tongue has wrapped around your throat, but hasn't started squeezing... yet. What do you do?1d6

Are the goblins not backing me up in this attack then?
If at first you don't succeed, try again - I shall attack it again with the pipe for: eOrjzNK|1d61d6

Your Squire comes in with the axe, chopping wildly at the tongue binding his Knight!

The frog is beaten about the head and releases you. Bleeding from the mouth a bit, it hops away as quickly as it can (not very) to turn and face you beside several other frogs. There is a lot of amphibian standing between you and some fresh frog-steaks, are you sure you want to press on? The goblins seem to have lost their nerve a bit as well, and you have bruises all over your neck. That frog might've dragged you into it's mouth and given you a good chewing were it not for their timely interruption.1d6

At this point we have seen a majority of Saint Seymour through our travels. I am looking to harvest some wood from him. Where would be the best place to go about that? The stream with the roots?

((I'll wait until after frankiestein responds before continuing)) Saint Seymour doesn't have much in the way of wood, He is still very much tough green flesh at this stage of growth.

Ah, I have some things come up and inevitably others come in just then! Ha! Sorry for the delay, its been a less than ideal few days and I make a habit to not trying to roleplay while upset.
So I have a few technical questions: 1. What is the relative assumed difficulty of creatures? Should I assume most things have HP and abilities beyond me? I had thought I could take on a large frog with 3 companions! 2. What determines who gets to act in a "combat round"? Is there a morale mechanic at play? I noticed that I acted twice as did the frog while the warrior acted once and the wizard or herald didn't at all. 3. How much can be done on a combat round? Can I simply attack? Can I attempt to attack and then wrestle them for instance?
Hurricane will bow at the entrance of others (I presume they came from the stalk?) He is a stout fellow, belly bulging against a tight red sash that slashes across my body and wraps around my waist. His face could be described as handsome if he didn't have the fondness of food that he did: strong chin hidden under a roll of olive complexioned fat and a girth surrounds his entire form. He is joined by 3 goblins which he gestures to in turn.
"No ambush here!" he will proclaim in a clear proud voice "These fine lads here are accompanying me as squires in my service and representatives of their clan, out to meet their needs. But I will let the Herald announce our titles:" He will gesture to the Herald and nod approvingly no matter what he says. "We could use your help though in harvesting some of these animals! Alas, I have not heard of this Saint you mention."

((No worries in the slightest, didn't mean to put you on the spot! Never any rush no matter what, real life comes first, hope you're ok))
1. The large frog that you've been beating on looks very heavily injured, but it has retreated to the safety of a much larger group of frogs. Your companions are... well, goblins. It was a pretty good plan, but in a straight fight, yourself and three goblins versus 20 cow-sized frogs? 2. Whatever makes the most sense. If you really want to go before someone that is trying to go first as well, then a DEX check might be required, but most things are just resolved as necessary. 3. Companions are not generally as active/reliable as PCs. If you want to call out to them specifically on your turn (as you did with Squire) then they are more likely to act. Herald isn't too combative, while Wizzard is just... weird.
I understand that the relative combat efficacy of enemies is sometimes hard to get a bead on, hope this fight hasn't dissuaded you too much! If you want to press on and keep fighting, you are welcome to issue orders to your companions or the newcomers.
The newcomers have come from the north, from Cell Block Zero.
Herald: "YELL! DOOT DOOT! You stand before HURRCANE OF STORM! He does the hitting GOODLY! There is also SQUIRE with his PET AXE and WIZZARD who does the MAGICK and ME, HERALD! YELL!"

I did mention that I nod approvingly but I cannot stress this enough, Hurricane is greatly amused and satisfied by the introduction Herald has given them. His chest will noticeable puff out a bit.
Turning first to address the victorian gentlemen: "Cows speak. Pigs speak. Even trees speak! We simply do not know their language. These speaking mine is not enough to deter me." Hurricane gestures his whip in the general direction of frogs. He will consider for a second before adding on "But I understand a hesitancy. If we were in a place different then this I might not."
Turning his gaze then to the slender figure in the red cloak: "I am not one to lie or hide my intentions. I fully intend to take these frogs if able. Both for myself and for the goblins!" as he says 'goblins' he will swing his whip hand upwards to add emphasis "If this 'Saint' takes issue with that then let them speak. Frankly though, I find such hoarding of resources in a place like this to be selfish and sinful."

As a note, you can 100% assume that Hurricane does not interrupt you or just asks some simple questions if you have some larger point to make. Like in this case, you could just go on to describe the work and conditions. I recognize that it doesn't emulate gameplay at the table where there is a lot of back and forth but I think the play by post format has slightly different demands.
"If this gainful employment results in greater food reserves with less effort than my current endeavor I would be interested."

"you could always return to it after the job is done."
so I have a couple things need doing and will be hiring you as a sort of henchperson.
To start with I can give you a crossbow (no arrows but I can tell you where to find some magic ones)
then after that I hope to go to the goblins and or kobolds (semi dangerous) to do some work for them hopefully to earn a little coin with which to pay you all (its close by and I know how to get to the kobolds)
then after that I plan on seeing the drow (very dangerous) to do some trading before going on to do the first step in my ultimate goal
additionally we could go on a semi suicide mission to slay the beholder (currently blind) very lucrative if we succeed
on our travels we need to keep an eye out for containers of any type, magical items, money, a way to undo petrification, and a sculptor or wood carver

BTW, wingilbear, I might have a way of moving the worm queen statue. I've learned that I have a totem that reportedly boosts the power of the soul. I might be able to boost my telekinesis and just pick her up, maybe.))

"Quite impressive! You certainly have this thought out many steps ahead. I would be quite happy to assist if it means an escape from this place. I have to admit that the concept of employment is quite a strange one here!" He will chuckle jollily and smile broadly. "Seems escape from capitalism is impossible even buried deep underground. I would be happy to join you as an equal in these endeavors if our efforts align certainly. And it seems they tentatively do!"
He will clap his hands steadily on the shoulder of Herald "My own goals are to create as large of an alliance as possible between all the mutual prisoners here. I am starting with the goblins. Herald! Do you think the goblin clan will join us to escape? I had hoped the meat and bones would show them how capable we are"
Whatever the heralds answer is he will continue with: "I am surprised you are attacking this beholder, it seems like they could be a powerful ally in this."

At this point the frogs have backed a fair way away from the lot of you, hiding behind Saint Seymour and croaking "woe" every so often.
((I'll let you lot talk as long as you like, just @ me when you are thinking of heading anywhere or have any questions))
((Edit: Just spotted the question you had))
"Mmmm PERHAPS!" yells Herald. "Goblins be good at goblin-ing. Goblin-ing good in caves. Crawl crawl. Munch munch. Follow the munches!"

The cloaked figure seems taken aback by your statement of befriending the dungeon and after a time says « there was one before you who managed such a feat befriending many in the dungeon, forging alliances. They died alone against the name thief while those that had promised to help hid in fear. The beholder is powerful and capable of much but has been driven mad by their time underground. I know where to find many of the factions in the dungeon: kobolds, The bone pickers, Minotaurs, albino orcs, drow, the powerful and kind gem people. Each comes with their own unique problems not to mention thé individuals in the dungeon such as the angel David or the mud assassin. For instance the Minotaurs are enslaved by a robotic menace while the angel David refuses to aid any that participate in any form of violence and The gem people will destroy any that approach their walls while the name thief still lives. No matter, worms will feed on all. »
Yeah let’s go check on the beholder first, they are quite close. I think while there we need to do some climbing so be prepared for that.
Are these goblins yours or denizens of the dungeon?

"I am humbled by your willingness to share such information about this place! And I am sorry to hear of your friends fate." Hurricane will seem perturbed by your tale, a bit of the wind taken out of him "I will take your warning to heart and be cautious of who I align and rely upon. I think it would be a lie to call these goblins "mine" but they are sworn to me. They are also denizens of this place. If you help me scatter these frogs and finish off the one we have weakened, we can bring that back for their people. Perhaps even more than just the one! After that I would be happy to assist with the beholder."
